How do I log on to the Beekeeping Course

Why can't I get my bees right away

Beekeeping is seasonal, for us to make the bees we have to build our colonies up at the start of spring which is August. We then have to split the hives and allow the hive to make a new queen. It takes 30 days for the hive to make a new queen and for the queen to mate and come back to start laying. So we have specific dates of each month that we aim to get the hives ready for you.

How do I introduce a new mated queen from Brood Brothers

We send you a queen in a plastic introduction cage. The cage has two compartments. The Candy compartment there is a small door that you need to break with your hive tool. This allows the bees in the hive access to the candy compartment. Place the introduction cage between the most populated frames in your hive and wait 5 days for the bees in the hive to eat through the candy to release the new queen into the hive. do not open the compartment where the queen is. as the hive needs time to get use to the new Queens pheromones. the bees over time will gradually accept the queen as her pheromones disperse in the hive while in the cage.

Can you send Nucs in the mail

Yes we can send Nucs in the mail, we will send the Nuc overnight to your nearest post office. the post office will then notify you to pick up. You cannot wait on picking the bees up. Bees tend to overheat so the sooner the better which is why we need to send the nucs over night and to your post office. Rural delivery can add 1-2 days more which is too risky.

Can you send Single Hives in the mail

Short Answer is No, NZ post wont allow large hives to be sent, only Nucs at this stage, so pick up and or Brood Brothers can deliver to you for a fee. We also have a division in the south Island if you are wanting single hives. Please email us and we are more than happy to work something out for you. bb.beekeepers@gmail.com
